Improve Your Short Game:

Practice Session 2 – Putting

Last week I focused on a drill to help hit wedge shots the correct distance. After hitting that shot correctly, you have a putt to make!

Here are some fun facts about putting from the PGA Tour’s Shotlink data. These facts show how good the best golfers are at putting:

  • From three feet, the worst putter on tour makes 97.17% of his attempts
  • Nine players have made ALL of their attempts this year from three feet
  • The worst putter on tour makes 75% of his putts from four feet and 62% of his putts from five feet
  • The farthest distance where PGA Pros make at least half their putts on average is eight feet
Circle Drill - Putting

Complete the Circle Drill by making ten in a row

This week’s session focuses on improving your putting from inside of eight feet. I have two drills for you in this week’s practice session:

Circle Drill

For this drill, I want you to put ten balls in a circle three feet away from the hole. Your goal is to make ten putts in a row before moving on to the next drill. If you miss, start over until you make ten in a row.

Ladder Drill - Putting

Make these six putts in succession to complete this week’s practice session

Ladder Drill

Once you have successfully completed the Circle Drill, I want you to line up six golf balls from three feet to eight feet. Separate the golf balls so you have one at three feet, four feet, and so on until you reach eight feet away from the hole.

Your objective is to make these six putts in succession. If you miss one, setup the golf balls again and start back at three feet.

Both of these drills are great at creating the pressure you will feel on the golf course when you need to make a putt. You will get nervous as you stand over the putt from eight feet to complete the drill, just like you would get nervous over a putt to break 80 or win a match against your buddies. Use these drills to get used to that pressure and create positive memories of hitting great putts under pressure.
